Part Your SD card with Cyanogen's Recovery 1.4

Just thought that this would help people using cyan's roms, they tend to run better when you part your sd card to ext2/ext3..

Thanks to simms22 and kitsunisan for putting this together.

Gparted is a part of Cyan's latest recovery console.
disclaimer THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR SD CARD!!!! so back up first!!!

go into recovery (turn on the phone with home and end call), open the console , type....
su (press enter)
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0 (press enter)

(You'll need to know the maximum amount of mb on your sd card so type):

print (press enter it will then enter your total mb on sd card, recommend you write down the max amount of mb for the card)

Then you want to delete the existing partition:

rm 1 (press enter)

Then create your primary partition, the numbers you input will vary depending on how many mb your card has:

mkpartfs primary fat32 0 xxxx

*(where xxxx = how much mb you want on fat32 part of sd card, example... " mkpartfs primary fat32 0 3584" [4096mb(total)-(512mb for ext2 partition)])

Then create the ext2 partition:

mkpartfs primary ext2 3584 4096

*(4096 being the total amount of mb on a 4gb card,
assuming thats the total given to you on the initial #print command)

And you've partitioned your memory card, no outside application needed.

also if you want, you can add a linux-swap...helps some people...

mkpartfs primary linux-swap XXXX XXXX

(this usually does NOT need to be more than 32 kb)

Anyways , I just updated the guide to include updating your ext2 to ext3 !

In recovery go to the terminal , type ......

su
upgrade_fs
reboot recovery

Press repair ext filesystems , reboot , and you are at ext3

Full Update Guide - MT3G/Magic Firmware to CyanogenMod

[edit]Downgrading from 1.6 TO 1.5 and Rooting for T-Mobile MT3G

These steps will presumably work for other 32B phones but have only been tested on a USA T-Mobile MyTouch 3G.

Files you will need:

Download the latest version of FlashRec from http://zenthought.org/content/project/flashrec
Download the COC10 build of Cupcake from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BLM4EDGE (sappimg.nbh)

Format your SD card to FAT32
- Windows: Right-click on SD icon and select format
- Mac users: Not supported for formatting (bug?)
- Linux: Use gparted (it's in the repositories of your favorite distro)
Copy the COC10 build (sappimg.nbh) file (and no others!!) to your SD card.
Shut down your phone.
Reboot into recovery mode by holding Volume Down + Power.
In the recovery mode screen, roll the trackball down to locate files. Wait until the phone finds all zip files.
Click the trackball to update.
Reboot when phone is done updating. You now have the one-click vulnerable version of the firmware.
Load the Android Market and find/install "App Installer".
Either shut down your phone and take out the SD card, or put it into USB mode.
Erase sappimg.nbh fro your SD card, and copy over the APK of FlashRec.
Start up your phone or mount the SD card, then run App Installer and install FlashRec from its APK.
Launch FlashRec. Use it to back up your recovery images.
Download the new recovery image from FlashRec (the default URL is for CM-1.4, leave it alone)
Flash the new recovery image.
Reboot into recovery mode from FlashRec, or hold Power + Home after shutting down. You should see the new Cyanogen recovery screen.

Due to recent events, CyanogenMod can no longer distribute Google specific apps with his ROMS. The way around this is to download and install the legal Google apps and then install CyanogenMod on top of those apps. The good news is that it works, the bad news is that it requires an extra step or two in the install process. Most people will need only two files.

Download the HTC Android 1.6 base image:

Download the latest CyanogenMod ROM for your device:

Put all necessary files on your SD card:

You will now install the actual OS of the phone. First you will install the legal Google apps, and then you will install CyanogenMod on top of those apps.

Turn your phone off.
Hold the Home button while booting to get to Recovery mode.
Select "wipe data/factory reset")
Select "apply any zip from sd")
- choose "HTC_ADP_1.6_DRC83_rooted_base.zip"
Press home to confirm and let installation complete
STOP - DO NOT REBOOT YOUR PHONE
Again, select "apply any zip from sd")
- choose "update-cm-4.2.2-signed.zip"
Press home to confirm and let installation complete
For Magic32A users only
Select "apply any zip from sd"), one last time
- Select rad-4.1.9999-32a-bfs304.zip
- press the Home button to confirm.
When this is complete, reboot your phone by pressing Home & Back or selecting that option.
Wait. This will take a couple of minutes. Be patient!

Downgrading to RC29 (US) or RC7 (Europe)

There is a security loop-hole in the RC29 / RC7 Bluetooth module that is exploited in the next step. This loop-hole has been fixed in more recent releases, so you must downgrade to RC29 / RC7.

Backup any files on your SD card that are valuable to you (you can copy them to your PC's hard drive)
Format your SD card to FAT32
- Windows: Right-click on SD icon and select format
- Mac users: Not supported for formatting (bug?)
- Linux: Use gparted (it's in the repositories of your favorite distro)
Download the RC29 / RC7 dreaimg.nbh file
- RC29 (US): http://android-dls.com/files/upload/DREAIMG.nbh
- RC7 (Europe): http://android-dls.com/files/upload/uk/DREAIMG.NBH
Put the file you just downloaded onto your freshly formatted SD card.
Turn your phone off.
Hold down the Camera button, and press the Power button to enter the bootloader.
When prompted, press the 'Action' button (trackball), to begin flashing the image. (on my G1 it is the opposite, the trackball cancels the install).
When it's done, press the trackball.
Press the Call, Menu, and End buttons at the same time to reboot. You may need to unplug your phone for this to work.

Rooting the phone

You need to have root (or 'admin') access to the phone so that you can install whatever software you want and not just what your provider gives you. This is where you will exploit the hole in the Bluetooth. This is not the same as unlocking your phone.

Finish booting up your phone, and sign-in to your Google account.
Once you're at the Home screen, open the keyboard, and press the Enter (Return) button twice.
Type

- Typing will bring up the Contacts screen, but you can just ignore that.
- There will be no indication to let you know you did it right. Just continue on to the next step.
- If you get an error when trying to connect (step 5), try pressing Enter twice and type "telnetd" and press Enter again
Open the Android Market, and install Android Telnet Client (by Koushik Dutta)
Open Android Telnet Client, enter "localhost" in the large text box and press connect. (You may have to enter "23" in the smaller text box on the right)

Cyanogen Recovery Image

Now you need to replace the standard Recovery Image with a customized Recovery Image based off the Recovery Image Google's Engineers use. This will allow you to do things like make a backup of your phone, and recover from a crash. Most importantly, however, this will give you the physical ability to install a custom ROM.

Download the latest Cyanogen Recovery Image (1.4)
- http://cyanogenmod.com/download/recovery/cm-recovery-1.4.img
Move the Image File to your SD card
- You may need to unplug/unmount your phone so the phone can access the SD card
Open Adroid Telnet Client and type
flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img [enter]
if done correctly you will see # #
Press Home key and proceed to next step.

If that's all you wanted to do, you're done! You should now have a fully functional phone.

Hard SPL (optional) - ONLY FOR HTC DREAM (G1)!!!

If you choose, you can install a custom SPL. This will free up approximatly 20MB on the system partition. As of CyanogenMOD 4.2.3, this is not necessary. However, with the release of Android 2.0, it might become necessary to flash a new SPL.

ONLY follow these steps if you've followed the previous steps on this page (or if you manually flashed your radio with the latest version). Otherwise, you will break your phone.

Go to http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/Install_Hard_SPL and download the SPL File
Place the SPL file on the root of your SD card.
Power off your phone.
Press and hold Home and then press Power to boot into recovery mode.
Once in recovery mode, Press ALT+A (or select "apply any zip from sd") and select the SPL file you downloaded to apply the update from the SD card. (If you do not see a menu / text on screen, ie - you see an exclamation mark, press ALT+L to show the menu.)
After the update is complete, hold Home + Back to restart.
Once your phone has booted up, turn your phone off so that we can make sure the update worked.
Press and hold the Camera and Power buttons to boot into your SPL. It should have three androids on skateboards at the bottom, with a white background. If you still have the four-color rainbow, go back and try again. Either way, press Call, Menu and End at the same time to reboot.

Apps2SD Fix (optional)

Apps2SD moves your apps to the SD card, freeing up more room on your phone. As of 4.2.3, this is not necessary, however, this may become a requirement in the future.

This is not recommended if using less than a Class 4 SD card, as it may randomly eject and cause all sorts of issues.

This will erase EVERYTHING from your SD card, so make sure to back it up!

These instructions are for Cyanogen's latest recovery console (version 1.4)

Power off your phone.
Press and hold Home and then press Power to boot into recovery mode.
Once in recovery mode, Press ALT+X (or select "go to console") to enter the command line.
Once in the command line, press [enter] to continue.
Type the following two commands to find the size of the SD card:

parted /dev/block/mmcblk0 [enter]
```

print [enter]
```
Find the line that says "Disk /dev/block/mmcblk0: xxxxMB". Write this down!
The next step is to delete all existing partitions.

rm 1 [enter]

Check to make sure all of the partitions were deleted.

Once the SD card is blank, create the primary partition. (This is the amount of space you want for your music, pictures, etc.)

- (XXXX = How many MB of storage you would like. Remember to leave 256-512 MB for your app partition, and 384 MB for swap.)
Create the ext2 (application) partition.
```
mkpartfs primary ext2 XXXX YYYY [enter]

- (XXXX = This will be the same XXXX number from step 9)
- (YYYY = XXXX + [256 or 512] (or whatever size you want to make this partition)
(Optional) Create a swap partition. (Dream RAM is 192 MB, so you probably would want 384 MB swap)

mkpartfs primary linux-swap YYYY ZZZZ [enter]
```
- (YYYY = This will be the same YYYY number from step 10)
- (ZZZZ = The end of your SD card (the initial size you wrote in step 6)
Check to see that the SD card was partitioned properly.
```
print [enter]
```
If everything is correct, exit parted, and run upgrade_fs to upgrade from ext2 to ext3
```
quit [enter]
```
```
upgrade_fs [enter]
```

(Optional) If you want, you can now upgrade from ext3 to ext4

tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 [enter]

e2fsck -fpDC0 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 [enter]

Once that is finished, reboot the phone

Congratulations! Now your SD card is ready to use Apps2SD (CyanogenMod does the rest automatically).

T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan (EIP)

So I don't think many people understand T-mobile's Equipment Installment Plan (EIP) in the US even websites like engadget are showing it wrong/weird, which is why I'm going to break it down....

First of all, it depends on a customer's credit. A higher class will basically have a higher Equipment Credit Line. As of right now this maybe up $1000 in Georgia. Particularly in Georgia, there exist the 10 EIP, which means you pay for the first tenth (10%) in a CORPORATE RETAIL STORE (ONLY, NOT CUSTOMER CARE OR AUTHORIZED RETAILERS OR ONLINE), and the next 9 payments go on your (maybe 3 months from your actual purchase) with no interest, no finance, etc, etc...(basically finance your expensive phone for free!). Now remember all of this depends on your ECL.

For example, if a person has an ECL of $800, buys a myTouch ($149.99 2 yr contract price) and $50 in accessories on a 2 yr contact (with full discount, of course), then they would pay $14.99 + $18.00 upgrade fee + $5.00 (accessories) + the complete applicable taxes on your purchase. Then you would have 9 payments of $20.00 ($15 for phone + $5 for accessories) starting about 2 or 3 billing cycles from the date of your purchase. And now your available credit line (remaining ECL) is $620.01 (800 - 134.99 (phone price - the first payment you made in the store) - 45 (accessories price - first payment you made in the store)).

Things get kind of complicated when your ECL is less than the purchase price. In that case you can only finance the greatest amount of ECL and your first payment is the difference between the complete purchase price and your ECL.

For example, you buy a $350 phone (TouchPro2 on a 2 yr) and your ECL is $300, then your first payment is $50 (350 - 300) + $18.00 upgrade fee + all applicable taxes, and you will have 9 payments of $33.33 (this maybe off by a few cents, but you get the idea) to go on your bill.

You can of course change what your 'down payment' will be, you don't have to do 10%, but its default at that.

These were scenarios for EIP 10 which is default at 10%

On EIP 4, which is default at 25%
On EIP 20, which is default at 5%

There maybe more, but Georgia was a test market for all of them, and I don't think there are any more....

so cyanogenmod, the cool people at google, and other help from the dev community figured out how to keep the all important google apps using an HTC recovery image! so root, then install the new rom (CyanogenMod 4.1.999) which is stable; from reading some comments and forums, it seems like it is pretty much a must to do an upgrade_fs to ext3/4 to make this work real smooth

CyanogenMod 4.1.999

I’m calling this 4.1.999 because I’m waiting for the MT3G OTA, and my new installer is a little different. The ROM itself should be incredibly stable, though. This is a modified version of AOSP 1.6 without the proprietary bits. In order to get up and running the first time, you’ll need to follow some simple instructions.

But first..

The Android devices we own come with many files that can’t be redistributed legally, and as you all probably know, I can no longer include these with my ROMs. So, in order to get up and running, you’ll need a compatible device with a compatible ROM.

If you are already running CM-4.1.99+, you can ignore the steps below and just flash!

7- Apply sdcard:choose zip *PICK dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip* from the list
ALLOW IT TO INSTALL FIRST…..you will see the “unbox” image………then it will automatically reboot HOLD HOME button while it reboots.
8- Apply sdcard:choose zip *Pick cm-4.1.99-signed.zip* from the list.
9- Reboot!

i found out today that the technical team (or R&D) for Sony Ericsson (the one that designs UI's and stuff for phones) has moved to Raleigh, NC, USA. This means that from now on all Sony Ericsson phones will first be released in the US and later moved to Europe.

Reason for this???

Social networking is HUGE in the US. Twitter, MySpace, Facebook are US companies and Trending Topics are always US issues. Social networking is the NEXT BIG THING, starting with the US. Therefore, we will see phones that primarily meet this need! Once social networking gets bigger and moves internationally more, those same phones will meet their needs.....but just later...

looks like soon iPhone sales are going to skyrocket...

in the past 2 weeks 2 countries and several carriers have announced that they will be selling the iPhone..

UK: Orange UK to offer iPhone soon

Canada: Bell and Telus to offer the iPhone...

...maybe this will push Apple to end in the US?? AT&T currently has the exclusive, but many T-Mobile users have a jailbroken iPhone. People looking to get it on Verizon, but probably will not occur until they drop LTE in 2011.

In other iPhone news, Adobe Flash will not be coming to the iPhone OS, but will be coming for Windows Mobile, Symbian, Palm (WebOS), and Android. Although Adobe has managed to show a flash based application. NOTE: THIS WILL NOT ENABLE YOU TO WATCH FLASH VIDEOS ON THE BROWSER OR SEE FLASH ADS OR PLAY GAMES ON WEBSITES.

Deutsche Telekom aka T-Mobile to buy Sprint Nextel? Probably, not.

The last few weeks have created a buzz about Sprint Nextel being done, finished, hasta luego, etc...whatever..

Because DT previously looked at buying Sprint Nextel, rumors once again resurface. The problem is even though together they would create the second largest US carrier, they are completely different networks. Sprint with CDMA, Nextel with iDen, and T-Mobile with GSM...

This would create gigantic problems for DT if it went through. It would take billions to convert Sprint and Nextel to GSM and also stop its completely crazy random WiMax-ness through CLEAR.

So, yea...it probably wont go through...but T-Mo might pick up a smaller company to improve its platform......

Motorola CLIQ with Motoblur announced officially for T-Mobile

so a few days ago (in fact the day after sprint announced the hero) t-mobile officially announced that they will be taking out the Motorola CLIQ (or DEXT in Europe). This is motorola's first android phone and i'm pretty sure this is what they are depending on to get them out that long, dark, black tunnel they have been in for the last 10 years..hehe..

hardware from reviews, etc. looks pretty solid and motoblur----honestly is pretty sweet...

manufacturers are finally catching on to android and what they can do with it..

motoblur lets you track your phone if youve lost it on a maps application on your computer

also constantly updates your twitter and facebook friends status...in fact say someone is calling you...their status(es) come up and if theyre in a bad mood, you ignore the call!! haha thats a funny one

a 5 mp camera....once again no flash

and finally a phone for tmo with a 3.5mm headphone jack!!!

As is customary with these kind of posts, some disclaimers:

This could be dangerous.
This should only be used if you know what you are doing.
Although this technique will work for any currently shipping android phone, this specific APK will works easiest with phones that are compatible withcyanogen’s 1.4 recovery image for the HTC Dream/Magic (32B).. There are instructions posted below for how to download a recovery.img that will work for other phones to your SD card, and how to use this apk to root those phones as well – it’s just not one-click… it’s more like some typing and 1-click so it might take you 30 seconds longer to do)

UPDATE: The “Recovery Flasher” is no longer in the market. This is entirely understandable and we as a community have no real right to be upset about this (their market, their rules – and after inspecting it they determined that the app violates them). So… Consider yourself lucky if you were one of the several thousand people who got it before it was taken down – and if not… there are plenty of mirrors to get it from posted here. (Android by design allows you to install applications from a variety of locations – you aren’t locked down to just one provider like on some fruity phones). So please don’t have a knee-jerk reaction and get mad at Google for this – they are still very much hacker-friendly (just search the market for applications that only work on rooted phones and you’ll realize that they are pretty laissez-faire in the market).

Flashing your recovery image:

Although the exploit itself can be used to execute anything as root, the prepackaged APK is designed to flash your recovery image with an updated one that allows installing modified updates signed with a publicly available key The reason for this is pretty simple: It’s the easiest way to enable you to install some modified image. It also enables you to use nandroid to backup (and restore) your entire phone to your sd card, and basically gives you what you need to be one of the cool kids andinstall custom android roms at will

Install the APK

~~The application has been uploaded to the market, and that’s the fastest place to get it from. Open up the Market and search for “Recovery Flasher” and download it from there,~~

In your settings, under software, tell it to allow untrusted sources. (necessary since the APK isn’t available in the market). Then, from the browser on your phone download the “recovery flasher 0.1 APK” from here: http://g1files.webs.com/Zinx/flashrec-20090815.apk Install it… and open it up.

Power your phone down. Reboot into “recovery mode”. On all phones I’m aware of, you do this by holding down “Home” and “Power” when turning it on. When you see something like this:

From here, you can install any of the custom roms using the instructions above. I highly recommend you use the “nandroid backup” button at this point.

IF YOUR RECOVERY MODE SCREEN DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THE ONE ABOVE, OR DOESN’T HAVE ALL THOSE OPTIONS, DO NOT PROCEED – reboot and apply again.

Known issues:

EVERY TIME YOU REBOOT YOUR PHONE INTO NORMAL ANDROID IT UNDOES WHAT YOU JUST DID. Every time android boots, it reflashes the recovery partition with the default one from a file stored in your phone. For safety reasons, we are not replacing this file – just flashing the partition directly. So if you boot to recovery mode, then boot back into your normal mode, and then boot back into recovery mode – you will see a triangle with an exclamation point and only 3 options. DO NOT WIPE YOUR DATA IF YOU ONLY SEE 3 OPTIONS AND AN EXCLAMATION POINT If you only see three options, reboot your phone into normal android mode and re-run the “Recovery Flasher” application – and THEN boot into recovery mode and you will see all the options.
If your phone doesn’t work with cyanogen 1.4’s image (which I believe are 32A HTC Sapphires [Rogers HTC Magic, etc]) you should not use this as-is – see my instructions for those phones at the bottom.. If recovery fails to boot, you should be able to pull the battery and reboot into the normal phone and then open the recovery flasher app again and “restore” your backed up recovery.img – but no promises… This is all done at your own risk.
The exploit used (CVE-2009-2692) in this hack is already patched. The kernel was patched upstream on August 11th, so it is likely that an update will be pushed out from T-mobile VERY quickly to help prevent malicious people from using this same exploit.
Apologies in advance to anyone who has to work quickly and work hard to patch this exploit in the wild. (Although it should be noted that if you just shipped phones that weren’t neutered in the first place, it would save us all a lot of work and help us all be on the same team… but that’s a topic for another post.)

1. Download QMAT http://revskills.de/pages/download.html
It’s a demo version so will only can open for 10 minutes.

2. Format your memory card to fat32. Please keep in mind some card does not work.

3. Search in your android market for ‘Terminal Emulator’

4. type ‘ cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid ‘ without the quote sign.

5. Note that code down on a notepad or something. Make sure everything is noted correctly.

6) Go to QMAT site http://revskills.de/pages/download.html, download QMAT 4.36
7) Extract the file, double click on qmat.exe
8 ) Click on Cyptoanalysis Tools > Crypto Toolbox
9) Look way below, there is a text box (beside “Reverse String” button. Key in the cid number you’ve got earlier
Click on the “Reverse String” button, the result is reversed…
Example: 532600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402
10) Copy the reversed cid
11) Go to QMAT again http://revskills.de/pages/goldcard.html to generate your goldcard (this is free for G1 phone, Thanks to Viper!)

12) Enter your email. For the CID, enter the reversed cid you’ve got earlier. However you need to replace the first 2 characters to 00.

Example: From “532600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402” to “002600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402”

13) click Continue and you will receive the goldcard.img via your email.
14) Go to your email, download the goldcard.img and save it to a directory first.
15) Now, download HxD Hex Editor for this site

16) Install and launch HxD Hex Editor program
17) Go to Extra tab > Open Disk. Under Physical disk, select Removable Disk (Must be your SD card), uncheck “Open as Readonly), click OK.

18) Go to Extra again, Open Disk Image, open up goldcard.img which you’ve saved to a directory earlier.
Now, you should have two tabs, one is your removable disk, the other is goldcard.img. Press OK when prompted for “Sector Size” 512 (Hard disks/Floppy disks), click OK.

19) Click on goldcard.img tab. Go to Edit tab > Select All, edit tab again > copy.
20) Click on the “removable disk” tab. Select offset 00000000 till offset 00000170, click on Edit tab and then Paste Write.
21) Click on File > Save. You may exit this program

Now, do a test to see if your SD card is “compatible”

Disconnect the USB cable connected to your SD card, then plug it back again. Go to My Computer, you will see your SD card (E.g. “Removable Disk ( F” ), double click and see if you can access it. If it prompted you to format, then forget about this SD card, don’t think it will work. After trying for days, I ended up buying a Kingston 2GB card.

[How-To] Root and un-root the T-Mobile myTouch 3G

After a lot of trial and error we finally did it! Many thanks to Jrbourque for being a tester with balls (he could have bricked his phone) and Haykuro for all the tips and tricks . Please give them credit where credit is due

Proceed on your own risk, you might brick your phone!!!

CREATE and PREPARE your GOLDCARD
Please start a new thread in the general section if you have issues creating a goldcard, this how-to assumes that you have a working Goldcard.
- Create a Goldcard according to this tutorial (Sandisk SD-cards might not work, I used a Kingston 2GB SD and it worked fine).
- Copy sappimg.zip to your goldcard.

PREPARE your spare SD
- Format a spare SD FAT32 (not your Goldcard! )
- Download the 1.33.2005 hboot, rename it to update.zip and copy it to the root of your spare SD.

FLASH your T-Mobile myTouch 3G
Make sure are using fastboot from the latest SDK (release 3) !
- Power-off your device
- Insert the goldcard
- Power on while holding volume down (of fastboot your device and then press volume down)
- It should pick up the sappimg.zip and you should be able to flash it.
- Once the flashing is FULLY finished power off your device.
- Remove the goldcard and insert the SD (with update.zip)
- Power on while holding back (=fastboot) and connect the USB cable
- Download my RAv1.2.0H recovery and fastboot it :

- Apply the update.zip (you are now flashing the 1.33.2005 SPL)
- Once the SPL is flashed you have to power off your device and boot it again in fastboot mode.
- The SPL should now read 1.33.2005.
- Power off your device and pull out the SD-card
- erase the update.zip on your SD-card (via cardreader)
- Download my RAv1.1.0H 32A based ROM and rename it to update.zip and copy it to the root of your SD-card (via cardreader)
- Insert the SD into your device.
- Power on while holding back (=fastboot) and connect the USB cable

How-to- Root, Hack, and Flashing your G1/Dream Read first!!

Why should you root your Dream/G1?

You can install a full Linux distribution, like Debian.
You can run applications that require root, like Screenshot and Auto Rotate your Browser and or any other application.
You can install the latest Android build directly from the Android source tree.
Customize your boot image.
Create full backups of the state of your phone.
Create custom ROMs.
Install Applications to your SD Card to save space.
Use your phone as a tether to connect your computer/laptop to the internet.
Turn your phone into a wireless router that provides internet access.

Well, hopefully one of those reasons convinced you to get root access on your phone!

Preparing to Get Root on your Phone
Getting root on your phone involves exploiting a security hole that existed in an early version of Android. The versions with the security holes are known as RC19, RC28, and RC29 (or RC7 or lower for UK phones). As of RC30 (RC8 on UK), Google patched the security hole so that your phone can not be rooted (don't worry, we can still root it!).
To check your version, go to the Home Screen, click your menu button, choose "Settings", and then click "About phone". You will then see the following screen:

If you have US-RC30/UK-RC8 or higher, you will first need to downgrade your phone to a previous version. (Skip these steps otherwise)

Format your phone's SD card to FAT32 mode:
- Hook your phone up to your computer using a USB cable and then wait for the notification to show up in your title bar of your phone.
- Click the notification, and then click "Mount".
- A new removable disk should show up on your computer. Right click it and select Format, and select FAT32 as the file system type.
Download and unzip the RC29 or RC7 image file. Copy the DREAMIMG.nbh file to the SD card. (RC29 for US, RC7 is for UK)
Turn the device power off.
Hold Camera button, and press Power button to entry bootloader mode. You should see a gray/white screen with instructions to flash your phone with the update on your SD card. If you don't see that, make sure you followed the instructions properly.
As per the on-screen instructions, press the Power button to start upgrade procedure. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS.
After it is finished, perform the restart your phone.

Rooting your RC29 or lower phone:
On RC29 phones and lower, anything you type into your keyboard is also being run in a hidden console with root permissions. More information regarding that at the bottom of this post. But, to get root access, do the following:

Instructions:

Download recovery.img and copy it to your SD card (see the previous instructions on how to copy from your computer to your Phone's SD card).
Download the Hard SPL and copy the zip file to the SD card.
All files must be on the root of your SD card.
Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
- mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
- cd sdcard
- flash_image recovery recovery.img
- cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img

Now you have root!

What To Do Now That You Have Root
Now that you have root, you will want to apply "Hard SPL" to your phone. HardSPL is what will allow you to apply flash images from other regions (like UK on US phones, and vice versa), create full backups of your phone, install the latest build from the Android source, and usually resurrect your phone if it is "bricked". You have already downloaded the file to your SD card, so now you can apply it.

Power off your phone.
Start up in recovery mode by holding home and pressing power.
You will now enter recovery mode. You should see an exclamation.
If you do not see a menu on screen, press Alt-L to show the menu.
Press Alt-S to apply the update from the SD card.
After the update is complete, hold Home and press Back to restart.

And now, the last step! You are still running an old version of Android, but you want to upgrade to the latest and greatest update! You can do this, and not lose root by downloading modified versions of the updates.

First, choose a modified image from the list below:

Download the image.
Rename it to update.zip.
Copy it to your phone's SD card.
Turn your phone off.

Please use Cyanogen's recovery image it is awesome!

First step for 2.63 is to setup our SDcard...back your stuff up and lets go!

Formatting you SDcard

You only need to do this once folks..if you already have 3 partitions including linux-swap move to step 2

You need Recovery image 1.31 to do this folks!

To format card SD card with linux-swap WARNING!!! this will reformat you entire SD card!!

You can use the recovery console and parted to format SDcards with 1.31 folks, no more going through hassles you have the tools on you G1!...here is an example of how to do this in recovery console using parted. DO NOT USE MORE THAN 32MB SWAP!!!

Example for 8GB card (this example plays it safe and will leave a small amount leftover regardless of the 8GB card)

Reboot and enter recovery
Enter console
#parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
#print (to verfiy we know what size card we are dealing with, the details should be straight forward)
rm 1
rm 2
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 7200
mkpartfs primary ext2 7200 7700
mkpartfs primary linux-swap 7700 7732

"End?" you need to place the last value for the linux swap eg.3964 for my 4GB card

Next we need to "quit" parted and upgrade our ext2 partition to ext3

Swap value is set to 30 currently, you can change this by modifying the "echo" value for swappiness in the a2sd.sh script

Flashing the ROM

The second part is getting the ROM on our phone

Copy the ROM to you sdcard as update.zip, enter the recovery console via home+power and lets flash, Check ext filesystems first, if it tells you to go to console to manually check do it! After I've repaired the EXT partition or if it didn't need repair I will now wipe and then apply the update and reboot...Done!
